How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed SensorCharles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.1. Engine Speed SensorThe sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes however the best method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this part, check for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.2. InjectorsYesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or injectors are not firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. When I start the engine without sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stays closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car is able to start when the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is plugged in, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even here after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!3. Fuel PumpThe fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style read more sensor is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. It is easy to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.4. Alternatively, GM's version of this part is a good option.5. TachometerA failing engine speed sensor could be the reason behind a slew of problems in your car. It's an essential component of your Audi's transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is turning.
